Description: Grandparents are raising more grandchildren because the biological parents have both positive and negative conditions that prevent them from providing safe and consistent care for their children. When grandparents become parents again, both they and their grandchildren's lives change and present newfound family assets as well as challenges. Kinship Kare of Northern Arizona, a program of the University of Arizona Coconino Extension, is in its fifth year of successful programs in education, support and advocacy for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren. KKONA provides programs for grandchildren, grandparents or any relative raising a family member's child. KKONA's mission is to bring grandparents and grandchildren together in order that they might seek favorable conditions to thrive as "grandparent headed households." KKONA's long term goals are to reduce isolation; to build healthy relationships; to help grandparents meet grandchildren's basic needs; to advocate for increased awareness and actions from service providers and; to prevent homelessness. KKONA trains Grandparent Mentor Volunteers and Grandparent Support Group Facilitators to assist, advocate and provide peer support for other grandparents. KKONA promotes agency collaboration and improvement of services to grandparent households. KKONA is alert to policy and education needs to improve the conditions of grandparents and grandchildren.
